These paperwhite bulbs make the perfect gift or stocking stuffer. These beautiful white blooms give off a strong fragrant scent while they are blooming.
Growing: Did you know you can plant paperwhites in soil or decorative rocks?
In Soil: Find a shallow pot (about 4 to 5 inches deep) with holes in the bottom for drainage. Fill until about three-quarters full with an indoor potting mix and plant the bulbs with the pointed ends facing up, allowing the tips to peek above the soil. Water well, allowing the water to drain through the holes. Water when the soil is dry to the touch.
In Rocks: Fill a 7-10 cm (3-4") deep bowl or other shallow container without drainage holes with crushed rock, pebbles, or other decorative stones. Place your bulbs in the container and add some rocks around the bulbs to help them stay upright. Add water until it is just below the bottom of the bulbs. You want the roots in the water but not the bulb.
Tip: To prevent your paperwhites from getting tall and floppy, give them a good stiff drink. Paperwhite bulbs grown in water with a 5% concentration of alcohol bloom beautifully on stems 1/3 shorter than paperwhites grown in unspiked water. Most clear liquors are about 40% alcohol, so that works out to 1 part liquor to 7 parts water.
